Hello All,

I finally got my HDMI Audio capable AVR (Denon 788) and I managed to get the HDMI audio out of it but can't get it to pass video.

I can get snow.

And,.. that's it.

Where do I look for help with this? ...... I'm so amazingly frustrated I just want it to work but don't know how to go about it.

Hi,

Well,... I'm so confused I'm not sure I'll be able to fully communicate the problem, but I'll try.

Until today my video went like this,... PS3 - 25' HDMI to DVI cable - HDFury- G70.

Now I have this new AVR with HDMI capabilities and I've not got it hooked up like this.

ps3- Denon 788- 25' HDMI to DVI cable- HDfury- G70.

I can get snow on the screen so it outputs something to the pj (not a no input condition) but it doesn't find the video coming in through the HDMI.

It finds the audio just fine....

I'm lost..... I hope this is simple and I can figure it out.

The Denon FAQ sux because it says use component out if you have this problem ... fuc that.

Is the Fury powered?

I've read lots of issues with AVRs passing the Video. If all else fails, you can get a 1x2 HDMI splitter. As an aside, this is also one of the reasons I'm wanting to use analog inputs for HD audio. Hope if gets worked out.

If you are using 1080P, try dropping it down to 1080I and see what happens. Also, you should be using the external PS.

Hey,

I found some info in the HDFury forums.

Seems I have to hook up the HDfury to a PC running powerstrip and then reprogram it's EDID chip. That's fuct. I have no idea how to do that.

I do have a video card with DVI output but I don't have a DVI cable........ Maybe the HDFury will plug right into the card... I haven't checked the polarity.

Either way,.. this sux donkey nutz.

Forgive my vent...I was just hoping this stuff would work.

Brian, Is that edid problem because of the AVR or something wrong with the fury?

I don't know yet. But,.. I plan on trying a few more things tonite before giving up completely.

The Denon seems to see the input from the PS3 just fine because when I switched from 1080p to 1080i the difference showed up on information screens in the Denon.

I will try a few more things. I don't fully understand the EDID stuff but I read about multiple forum members getting the reprogram the EDID stuff to work with similar setups.

Welcome to the wonderful world of HDMI. Your lucky with a Moome card you need to change EDID chips as in replace soldered in SMD chip. That's why I gave up on the whole thing and went back to RGB from an HTPC, it just works.

I think maybe all I need is the power supply for the HDFury.

At any rate this new AVR sounds amazing! ... I'm sure I'll get this sorted out.

Actually,...

I don't think it's the power supply,.. I think I need to reprogram (hack) my hdfury. There are members here that posted in the HDfury forums about denon and "snow" on the screen and the answer is to reprogram the hdfury slightly.

It's going to be difficult for me,.. if I can do it. I'm trying to get together the stuff I need.

My guess is the power supply. My onkyo 605 wouldn't work with the gamer and it can't have a power supply.

Power supply could the the problem but anyone in the hdfury forum with a denon avr has the same "snow" I've got unless they edit the hdfury EDID.

I'll likely seek a power supply but since this Denon AVR problem is known and widespread,.. I'm going to try that fix first. (If I can.)

while it does cost money, the PSU is an easier plug and play fix. You can try to pull your hair out with the EDID stuff though. Laughing

Well,

The power supply does cost money. Radio Shack carries nothing that meets the needed specs so buying it there doesn't even work.

I'm not anti-power supply at all... I want a power supply for my HDfury at this point.

But,... I do believe the EDID stuff is the cause of my problem and I've been "pulling my hair out" for most of the day today trying to get it fixed. It took me a long time to setup my PC so it can modify the EDID and then I had to pull down the hush box.

One good thing is I wondered how good my hush box was but I watched the new Indiana Jones trailer with the hush box off and I realize it made a nearly unbelievable difference.

Anyway... This EDID stuff has been a major headache. This Am I went to Radio Shack, WalMart, Sears, Staples, and a local Computer Boutique and the last place was the only place that had the DVI cable I will need but I opted not to spend the $20 for it. So,.. I ordered it from Monoprice for $7 shipped and then a few minutes later my wife calls and says the IT guy has boxes full of DVI cables and she has one for me that I can keep. Monoprice shipped my order about 12 minutes after I placed it Smile

Anyway... I've been studying EDID tools and think I have a freeware tool that will work and have learned how to boot my old PC to command line and all that.

In short... Yep,... I've been pulling my hair out alright but I'll get the EDID editing stuff done tonite and then I'll know if it's the power supply or not.

Greg,

After I do the EDID thingie tonite and it all works and stuff.... I'll explain it to you so you can do it and then use your HD Fury.

I have a feeling re-writing the EDID is about as simple as can be. For me the hard part was getting a DVI cable and configuring my PC. My DVI video card was not installed and I had to hunt for it's driver and stuff like that.

Mikeeby,

I appreciate you comment but I was a HTPC user for years and "just works" wasn't really applicable. Actually I got my HTPC working pretty much bullet proof eventually but ... I'm glad I left HTPC behind. My PS3 is like the ultimate HTPC and costs a lot less then any HTPC I ever built too. I actually gave using PC's completely and switched to mac but that's a long story (took me forever to make that choice but I'm much happier on the mac side.)

I hear you, I was going the route too when I got my first HD-DVD player, I thought great, now I don't have to mess around custom timings and all the HTPC issues but after dealing with all the HDMI EDID Moome headache and I went back to HTPC. I found a STB to limiting in regards to sync timings for my XG plus 3:2 pull down jitter drives me crazy so I'm really pushing the bandwidth envelop running 1080p72Hz and what I see so far.

Vista seems like a rock solid product when compared to XP for HD-DVD and Blu-ray, PowerDVD really isn't too bad. Out of about 50 Blu-ray and HD-DVD only one has given me problems and that was fixed with a software update about a week after the disk was release. One thing I do that with my HTPC is treat it like a STB. No internet browsing and only a few games. I like to keep it simple it seems to cut way down on problems.

I won't rule out going PS3 at some point but right now I could not be happier with my HTPC.

Mike

I am sticking with my old H/K receiver for now so I don't need to set it up for the HDMI receiver stuff. Straight from HD DVD to the kimcoder works flawlessly. Once I get a BR player I will just pick up a 4x2 switcher from monoprice and keep going.

Some day I will get the lossless audio...some day.

Glad to hear it all worked out. Don't you just love how technology works?! Thumbs Up
