While you have the lenses removed and the projector off, shine a flashlight in at the tube face. While looking at the tube face, tilt your head from side to side. You should be able to tell if the problem is the tube or the c-element.
Please post pictures of the tube faces with the projector turned off and the room lighted so that we can try to judge their condition.
Another test. If the face of the c-element is damaged, with the projector running and a test pattern up, try dampening the face of the c-element with a soft wet cloth. if what you see does change when wet, it's the c-element. If not, it's the back side of the element or the tube face.
