The price differences between the 40GB and 80GB is $200? While I'd like to buy another PS and have it also with the flash media slots I just cannot justify another $200. Heck, I could buy 10 Blu-ray movies for that kind of money.

I had the 60 gig first, but the hard drive died after about six months so I returned it to costco, was going to get another one, but it had been discontinued by then and all they had was the 40 gigs so I got one of those

Wow Red,... Hope they gave you more then just the 40Gb. I suppose they made up the price diff as well.
I've got a 60GB since Nov 06 and I'm lovin every minute of it. Best electronics I've ever bought apart from my G70 of course.

I have the 60gb version and it's no where near full, and that's with me downloading every movie trailer video in existence.

Kal, I'm new to PS3. How do you download movie trailers to the HD? I have mine connected to the internet via wireless connection. I only hooked it up for the firmware upgrade and the hopes of streaming from my PC.

Chip,
There are a couple of threads on the PS3 where we were talking about it. You can download theatrical and Blu-ray trailers from the PlayStation store for free (access it right from the PS3 XMB - cross media bar). It sucks, though - it seems like Sony's been adding about one new trailer every week or two. BORING!
You can also download HD move trailers from apple.com/trailers. They're MPEG-4 w/AAC audio - not AC3. The look pretty nice, but the sound isn't quite typical HT/BD quality. Still very fun to watch, though.
In one or two of the PS3 threads, Kal and I discussed the methods by which to extract the PS3-compatible mp4 file from Apple's QT MOV wrapper. Then, you can stream them from you desktop computer, or copy them to a memory stick to copy to the PS3's internal drive.

Me, too. I can't believe the pathetic rate at which they add trailers to the PS network store. Maybe the new store design will help?!?!?
FYI, here's the thread where we were talking about grabbing trailers from the apple trailers site and resaving to mp4 to play on the PS3:
https://www.curtpalme.com/forum_archived/viewtopic.php@t=9936.html
I always grab 2 or 3 spanky new trailers before I have people over. Kind of fun to watch the "trailer of the week".

I haven't registered a acct to get access to the store yet. Are the trailers in 1080P?

Most of them are 1080p.
They vary though and sometimes you can choose what quality you want. (1080i, 720p ect.)

GT 5 Prologue looks fantastic for a demo on my G70 (at the moment with 1080i) Sometimes it should be subtitled with "this is not a movie"

I would check that right out if it wasn't the only demo I've ever seen that costs $40.
On the other hand,... GT HD is free and fun and if you still haven't setup your PSN account get er done and DL that one.

Yeah, GIT'ER DONE!!! I'd just also add that it would be a good idea to grab a USB keyboard from a PC to do that little exercise... Lest you stab somebody out of sheer frustration resulting from entering all your personal info by way of the dual shock controller and virtual on-screen keyboard.

Does the PS3 do everything the xbox can with the obvious differences (HD DVD vs BR, Wifi vs None)?
I am contemplating getting rid of the xbox since I have a standalone hd dvd player, and dont play my three xbox games anymore.
We are looking at getting a wii for gaming.
I would like to be able to tap into my MCE boxes and also stream DVD's if possible.

Pretty much, Greg... only way cooler and more sophisticated looking than the 360. Plus, unlike Xbox Live, the PlayStation Network is free.
If you've got your DVD's ripped already, they may or may not work depending on you ripped them, but it would be easy enough to convert them to something that will work. But, you can definitely rip and stream from MCE or WM11 to the PS3. Not only DVDs, but HD MPEG2, etc.

Yeah the free playstation network is pretty cool. Hopefully that doesn't ever change.
Does it stream divx movies?
I am sure I could look this stuff up and not muck up this thread. I don't own one yet!

WHERE DID YOU BUY YOUR PS3 FROM?
I am curious. I originally had the wife get the now-returned Samsung BD-P1400 from Costco because of their return policy. I didn't want to have to deal with the manufacturer, and only wish to engage Amex as a last resort option. But, Since Costco doesn't sell the PS3 unbundled, I am looking for a best place to buy the PS3. Price doesn't seem to be a consideration since there is only one SKU available right now in retail, and I am not sure I want the hassle of being taken for a ride via mail order.

I bought mine from BB and used my rewards card. It added a few bucks to my rewards savings acct.

I bought mine from Walmart.
I sort of "camped" out for it on release day. (But it was a 24 hour Walmart so I was able to hang out in the store.) I was planning to flip it for profit but I changed my mind and kept it.
