He's a prick,
Just because he installed a digital that cost many times more than a G90 stack doesn't make it better.
Must have been a little PO'd when he saw his SUPERKONTRAST has its ass kicked by the SUPERDUPERKONTRAST of the G90 stack (or any other CRT for that matter )

That JAG OFF has never even seen a G90 stack ESPECIALLY one that is all digital (HDMI) with gamma.
He is a serious moron. He parades all over the place over that projector. What a f*ck*** waste.
The dumb ass had to build a special iris plate to cut over half the light from it to get maybe 3000 to one contrast ratio. WHOO HOO!!!! THAT PROJECTORS RATED CONTRAST IS LIKE 1500 TO ONE!!!!! LOL!
A $100,000 projector for a 12ft wide screen. What a dumb ass.
I'm willing to bet that Art's $35,000 projector at 14ft wide is actually BETTER than Mr. SUPERKONTRAST!

Go check out his site. It's all ONE LONG PAGE. Check out his 'Helene' thread. It looks all well and good, but look at the coil of wire under the rack, I can only imagine what the wiring looks like. I asked him to post a pix of the back of the rack, and he basically called me an *******, and both posts got deleted.
Big old GOOF is what Peter is. All show, no go.

Dude, he doesn't shut up either!!! His big ASS MOUTH is all over the damn place. I'm sick of it. I hate to say this but I really disagree HEAVILY with his design considering he got to build the room from scratch.
Oh, and BTW, what's with the DINKY ASS SURROUNDS in that room???? Again, what a DUMB ASS.

Since I am quoted, I will reply to this.
Peter is a good guy, if you ever meet him in person. He is a little neurotic, but so be it. This is his profession and he is trying to sell his services, so I give him a little leeway. I actually take most of his posts with a grain of salt and chuckle half the time.
I don't know if he was serious or kidding when I mentioned CRT. It may have been a little of both. I believe it was in reference to inviting Brian Feldman down to take a look at the theater. Peter has had some issues with the software and I thought Brian might be able to help. I am not sure if that is Brian's expertise, but he was selling HTPCs for AVS. Also, I was interested in what Brian thought as he has a G90 calibrated by Roger Galvin (well kind of). I don't understand it, but he said I would be the only CRTer to see the theater. Of course, he mentioned that Ugo has a CRT and Art is supposed to travel down to see it as well.

I think that is a little over the top. I don't believe he has seen a stack, but he prefers a Torus. I doubt Art's pj is better, but I can't say as I haven't seen it. I know Peter goes to all of the shows and finds the best pj he can regardless of who makes it. He used to be on the DP bandwagon, but now he likes Barco. If someone makes something better next year, then he will sing their praises.
As far as contrast, he is on the ANSI bandwagon. That is his preference, but he does try to make it out to be more important than on/off. I disagree. I am not sure he is maximizing ANSI either with his room, as it is not completely black. I would like to see some numbers. I wonder if a black velvet shadow box around the screen might be of benefit.
On the room, he had a budget and I think he had to design it into the space that he was given, so it wasn't totally from scratch. I asked him about the surrounds and I believe that was a budget consideration. From everything I have read, the TRW is an incredible addition and I think most would purchase that along with a corresponding reduction in the surrounds or elsewhere. That is the one thing I would really like to go back and see (or hear).
I do find it humorous that you are giving him crap as he is pimping and using SMX just like you are. I personally thought it was ok, but nothing to write home about and definitely not worth the expense. I don't particularly care for acoustic screens, but onto each their own. People make it out like Ruben did this great thing, when all he did was find some sunshade manufacturers and market a particular brand. I am sure he has a license agreement to sell this to the HT market. I will give him kudos for the frame, if you are into the automated masking system.

This is interesting, since you don't even know the guy. You call the guy a prick based on a couple of quotes that Cliff pasted. Give me a freaking break. He was into this business and installing HTs before you were born. I believe he has seen plenty of CRTs and does not need to see anymore to know what he likes. He was the first one to install a Torus in a HT. He actually commissioned a ray traced Torus with a G90 not the guessing that everyone else does with their Torus implementation. If I remember correctly, he told that he purchased special lenses for the best corner focus. If it wasn't for him, then Chuchuf and everyone else who has made one wouldn't have ever owned a Torus screen. For this alone, he should be commended. He has come up with other ideas admittedly some are out there, but that is why I chuckle at some of his posts. He throws stuff out there to see what will stick and may have merit. If Curt called him a prick, then I would let it go because I know Curt has been around and knows Peter but someone who makes an assumption based on a couple of quotes is another story.

Actually I only know him from the avsforum..
I guess the whole high end thing goes against what I stand for. Do it right, but do it on the cheap as well. I know that occasionally that has lost me a job in the past, but with my technical knowledge, I (usually) install stuff that works right the first time,a nd can come in at 1/3 the price of the super duper high end sales guy.
Kudos to Peter for upselling the sh*te out of everything, but his hoity toity, ' Do as I say, otherwise you're wrong' attitude is not required. If I didn't know him and were a potential custom HT customer, I'd kick him out of my place before he got 1/2 way through his sales pitch.
Those that have the money and want to keep up with the Joneses and believe his whole song and dance, I'm sure they are a good candidate for his systems.

Exactly. Coming off like a pompus ******* like that is just wrong. I'm not saying I'm perfect but this "I all am all, therefore I am, everyone is wrong, and I'm right" kind of attitude and proclaiming a projector that has a native 1500 to one contrast ratio is the TOP performer on the market is crap.
I don't go around to everyone and proclaim the G90 stack to be the best of all front projection systems and RAM IT DOWN everyone's throats and I would expect the same from anyone else.
Like I said, I'm not perfect, but just trying to gage why somebody would choose what they did and try to get to know them better and get slammed, well, let's put it this way, he is lucky that is his theater thread because I would have gladly gone to town with him.
His other comments I've read like "2 or 4K 3 chip DLP is as good as 70mm film" is crap as well. There is NO WAY a 2 or 4K DLP is going to do as good or better than 70mm film.
Either way, it's not the end of the world, and I'm not even mad anymore. I'm moving on but will keep my opinion until proven otherwise. I'm glad Peter enjoys his work and has accomplished what he has. I'm sure it's kick ass but STOP RAMMING YOUR OPINIONS down everyone's throats all the damn time.
It's old........
Kinda like Raster.

Spanky I wasn't trying to give him crap. I wasn't trying to come off as an ******* at all. As far as SMX or any other product, everyone has their own opinions and has a right to them.
I would NEVER use a torus in a home theater. I have seen several high gain torus screens and never liked one of them. I'm not a fan of High Gain screens period (although the way the market is going with digital, I'm going to have to go high gain to get the kind of light output I crave on my screen size when I go digital).
Peter also made a comment about the G90 being "dull and drab" to which I strongly disagree with as well. First of all, when he did that G90 setup, we did not have digital paths to CRT like we do now along with gamma tweaks. It was a night and day difference when I went digital in my video chain. It's sharper, better colors, and flat out better than any analog signal that you could send to a CRT projector for sure.
Anyway, sorry if you took offense to my comments. I was pissed off and even contrary to my last post, I will chill now.
Cliff
