If you swap out the 40 gig hdd in a ps3 for a larger one, say 200 gb, could I save a couple of whole bd movies to it for quick viewing. My whole system is rack mounted out in the garage so if I could leave a couple of popular movies saved to the hdd, that would be great.

In the garage?? What kind of temperatures do you see in the garage in the summer? I'd be worried about that.

Have no fear Kal baby. The rack is positive pressure air filtered and a/c'd Laughing I take my $hit seriously. When the equipment move is complete, I'll start a new post with pictures.

Ok, following instructions I found on the net, I installed WMP11. I had previously set up the PS3 for wireless access to my router. That is tested as I used this connection to update the firmware. I'm trying to share media files but nothing shows in the WMP11 share with device window. the instructions say it (PS3) should be listed there as a "unknown device" but it doesn't show. Nothing does. Any thoughts. If I can get the two to interact, I can rip DVD's to my movies folder and the PS3 can retrieve them to it's hdd for playback.

Chip,

Are the PS3 and computer on two different subnets or even on two different network switches? If so, they won't see each other.

Both the PC and PS3 are connected to the same router. The PC is hard wired with a ethernet cable and the PS3 is set up as a wireless device. That Wireless connection tested and working. I'm not even sure what a "subnet" is.

I'm going for a hair cut. I'll be back in a hour or so.

It won't see anything on a different **switch** !? Switches should be completely transparent to network devices. Even non-routable addresses like 192.168.x.x have no problems crossing switches.

I'm not a Windows guy, but checking the firewall sounds like a good plan.

I'm not a network guy, so I can't tell you why... But if you've got the two devices on two different switches, for whatever reason they won't see each other. Like you said, the switches should be transparent, and for all practical purposes, they are. Both devices can ping the other - so, the IP connection is functioning. But, whatever the discovery standard is that UPnP uses, it doesn't seem to work through two switches. I have no idea why it won't work, but it doesn't. I wonder if Chip's router's wired and wireless LAN's are treated as two separate networks connected by (in essence) two switches.

PS3 and 360 forums are littered with posts from people with their game machine set up wireless and their PC wired, and can't get the two to see each other.

I am making progress now with a program called TVersity. I now have a connection between the pc and PS3. Now all I need is a program that allows me to copy protected content DVD's to my videos where TVersity can stream to the PS3.

Hey,

I think I've read about people that put Linux on the PS3 and then did some ripping.

don't know if that still works since the copy protection on Blu Rays has evolved.

But,... You likely don't want to deal with that type of trouble. (Putting linux on the PS3 that is.)

I did some experimenting last night. I have TVersity on this pc which is hardwired to my router. As I said earlier, the PS3 is a wireless connection to the same router. As long as the pc is on, the PS3 is connected to TVersity which has access to My videos. I don't have any videos stored there yet as I need a program to allow me to back-up protected dvd's. Heywood J. has a couple of HD movies saved to his HTPC that he's going to rip for me to try.
