Well, Mike and I gave it our best shot, but to no avail. we rechecked every singly connector, daughterboard connector, etc. for looseness or bent pins. No luck there. I checked the P14 and it was 3.95 vdc in standby and 6.40 vdc powered up, so the LVPS seems to be OK. I even swapped out a spare LVPS I had, but again no luck.
I measured the G2 at the VNB on one tube and it measured millivolts (noise), so I am thinking either some protection circuit is holding off the HVPS, or the HVPS itself is dead. Mike said he noticed a slowness to focus just before this thing died, which makes me suspect a failing capacitor in the HVPS.
Is there a means of testing the protection circuit? I seem to recall that a fault on a card can hold off the HVPS, and that if a bad card is removed, and the HVPS fires up, then you have located a card related problem. Which cards can be removed and still expect a HVPS to fire up (assuming it isn't a dead HVPS)?
Also, is there any risk in puting this HVPS into my working 8500 to see if it is the HVPS? I would hate to tear up something on my projector trying to figure this out.
Thanks to all you gurus out there.

The CLM and VIM must stay in. I think you can try it by removing one board then try turning it on. I'd start with the focus board, then the HDM, then the neck boards one by one. Let me check on the VDm and Convergance board as I know if one is disconnected it might not work i think i saw it on a post some where.
So I would take out focus board and try
then HDM
then VNB's

Ok you can also disconect the VDM and Convergence boards from the mother board also.
Tim Martin posted this over on the A site for a clicking sound but it should work for this too.

This is not that hard to troubleshoot; just unplug or remove boards until the clicking stops. Leave the control board and VIM installed, you cannot power up without them. |
So keep pulling boards till it fires up, if it doesn'd then i could be the CLM or The VIM but thats still not definite that
one of those two the bad board.

Mike and I tried our best, but the Marquee isn't cooperating. Mike is a nice guy, and a student about to start his last semester. I wish I could have made it work, but I couldn't. Mike needs a projector to keep his roommates from rioting in protest, so I swapped him my digital for his dead marquee. Yes - I know it a sin to convert one of the CRT faithful, but may I be forgiven for good intentions?
So, I now have a second Marquee with some of draganm's old tubes in it. I guess I can use it to try some of the mods on, just to see if they make a difference in my unit. Certainly the tubes are better than mine (no offence to Athanasios - who sold me my current tubes).
Any suggestions which mods seem to offer the best improvement? My experience in modding tube audio equipment tells me that some really matter and the rest are very small improvements made mostly because the tinker bug bit me.
