Man, this is starting to sound like the "In" thing to do. And to think I thought it was a novel idea. This is great. And best part is, I have an idea of the amount of work that will go into it. |
I like the G70's housing's too. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I remember reading a thread that Kal started about swaping tubes in a G70 where they are one of the easiest to swap and old tube for a new tube as they don't silicone the tube's into the housing's.
EDIT: Ahhh found it:
EDIT2: put the proper link up ooops

and the thread that kal was refering to:

Mike | Even if you weren't joking, that was still damn funny. | you guys joke around all you want. I had a G70 with $1300. invested spot burn 3 perfect tubes after a power board failure. That's enough to put anyone in a foul mood. No one to blame but myself though, Never should have strayed away from the Marquee chassis.

Man, and to think I thought my friday was bad since my car broke down on the side of the road. I think you've got me beat by a mile. | yikes, actually my Friday finished up pretty good with some really good news from work. I hope your car has minor issues and not engine/tranny related.
On a side note I spent Sunday helping a local friend replace boots and Glycol on an 8500Lc he's been running for a few years. Despite everything I've read, and my tendency to avoid LC machines becasue of leaks, fungus, ect, this procedure wasn't too bad at all. The trick was not to try and save the old boot, not that you ever should save a 10 year old LC boot. Once we decided to cut the boot in half, then getting it all apart and ready for reassembly was a piece of cake. I wish I had the time to post pics here for reference.

That's only on those badly made Marquee chassis.
Maybe you should stray over to something made properly
Jokes aside, there is something wrong with those LC housings, they need to be anodised black or something. NEC ones don't do that.

I think it's in the fuel line, and simply changing the fuel filter may be all it needs. Of course, I'm no mechanic and I don't even play one on TV.

Almost sounds like using someone elses LC housing would cure that problem, provided you don't lobotomize it while installing.

The inside of the LC chamber IS anodized Mark. It's obvious, kind of a military field Green color. It was starting to gunk up though and I thought "aha, the steel fill screws are rusting" since that's what everyone here was posting. You could actually see 2 streaks of gunk streaking up from the fill hole area too.
Well when we took it apart the screws were fine. That's when I realized what was happening. The plating or anodizing on the LC chamber does NOT extend down into the threaded fill holes. I have stuff Anodized at work all the time and this is quite common, for some reason the Anodize doesn't take to threads well, especially on small holes like these #6 screws. I'm not sure what the fix is though, maybe push some RTV into the hole before putting the screws back in?
AFA "other machines", well your right. I have never seen a contaminated G70 but you get great LC chambers there and lose reliability everywhere else, not real a good trade. BTW, the fill screw on the 70 is 4 times larger and they problly make sure it's plated well duruing QA inspection.

First, everything has to be absolutly clean. Second, given the age of the bellows (the rubber could be breaking down) and the amount of labor involved, I'd use new bellows. I'd replace the fill/vent screws with s-steal ones that protrude just inside the housing, using up all the threaded area. If they aren't already, I'd swap out all those little screws that hold the bellows in place with s-steal ones. Beond that, prior to re-assembly, I'd be winging it, inspecting all surfaces that come into contact with the coolant and deciding what if anything needs to be done to those surfaces. If I found any questionable metal parts, I might consider glass-beading them and coating them with a chemical resistant flat black paint.
and that's all I have to say about that. F.G.
