|
|
Given the fact that a digital that can rival a CRT and has vertical stretch costs $6000 and a good anamorphic lens costs north of $1500, will an affordable blender make blends the next big thing in CRT home theater?
Put another way, given you can pick up a pair of minty G70s for <$3000 or a couple AC 8" machines for <$2000, how cheap does a blender need to be before blending catches on? Or, will it never really catch on?

Dave,
No doubt it will be a viable or even attractive option for a few, but there's still no getting around the fact that you have double the power consumption, and double the heat and noise (or double the hush box requirements.) Plus, there's a the fact that a lot of us don't even have rooms that will accommodate the 10'-wide scope screen. After all that, you get to mount two machines, converge two machines, maintain two machines, etc.
Personally, I think as the price falls on nice 8" machines, so will the price be falling on digitals. Imagine in two years if there's an RS2-quality machine for $2000. Even if you throw a lens in there, will it be worth the hassle of two CRT projectors (and twice the fun that goes along with them) plus the cost of a blending unit? I don't know. I doubt it.
Seriously, the hassle, complexity/lack of flexibility of mounting already makes CRT appeal only to a select few - I can't see how doubling all the bad stuff about CRT will help capture much popularity.

I dunno. A single CRT is more fuss and bother than most people want, especially in these days of ever-improving digitals. Even with cheap CRTs and a cheap blender, I suspect the audience of HT enthusiasts who are willing to go through the braindamage of acquiring two suitable projectors, mounting them, reducing the 2-CRT noise level, wrangling the blend, etc, is going to be pretty small.

I agree 100% with Gary and SC - I don't think it'll ever become popular even with 100$ blenders that do a fantastic job. It's just so much work. It's not twice as much because of 2 projectors, it's more like 4x the work as it's more complex. Then there's the drift issue (both convergence and colour temp). All projectors drift just slightly - even the really good ones do, but often all 3 tubes will drift the same way so it's not noticeable.
Doing greyscale on 2 machines isn't going to be fun either: You'd have to get both close to accurate in exactly the same way - not always an easy task.

I personally what to give it a shot and await the new hardware from TV-One. Yes setting up one CRT takes a lot of work in and of itself but for those who have CRT's for the Hobby sake of it that extra work is half the fun!!! And trying to squeeze the most out of these beast is the other half, I had a digital and it was boring. If I wanted less hassle i'd sell it all and get a RS2 and be done with it. So I am not sure if its a new craze for home theater but blending is big in the commercial world with digitals.

Guys!
I do not find it much more work than one CRT, but it is easier for someone with some ezperience in CRTs. Gino learns very quickly and seems to enjoy the challenge, so he is not like most of the guys here. To take on blending you have to want CRT quality and big light output on a 9-10-11 foot screen width, this is for those people and the result, done well, is to die for.

That is one of the nastiest ass spiders I have ever seen in my life. He even has a little partner if you look close you will see.
That web was HUGE!!!!!!!!
There was one strand on that web that must have went close to 15 feet from the web to the ground. I have never seen anything like it.
Needless to say I took a pic next to a BIG ASS termite hill right by it before I took the pic of that scary ass spider.

I thought you were just saying " HEY GINO!" "Watch this!" just before you were about to dive in.

You should see some of the webs that the golden orb weaver spiders make around here. I've seen one 15' tall and 7' wide! They can even catch small birds. These spiders are bigger than your hand, and they are black and smooth, not hairy at all... really creepy. Their silk webs are said to be almost as strong as Kevlar!

3 things.
1. I'd pay at least 2 grand for a blender, if one could be found that works anywhere near the 'zilla.
2. DAMN! if that spider was near my house, he could have it!
3. Hey Cliff! Did ya post any pics of gino's setup???
Please?

I'm not sure that is going to happen. Digital tech is rapidly reaching maturity. About the only advances I can see in 1080p past the RS2 are: better panel alignment, better contrast ratio, less motion blur. But all these will be very incremental. Not like the jumps that have occurred in the last several years.
Consider this, all through the 70s, 80s, and 90s, "the best TV" you could buy remained about the same price (adjusted for inflation). They got a little bit better, got bigger, and got more features (sleep times, PIP, etc). But the price had settled in. I think the digital world is approaching that. I don't think we'll see RS2 quality at <$3000. My guess is that $3500-4500 is where it will settle in. Bad looking LCDs will probably occupy the $1500 spot with 1080p projection not being much cheaper than that.
So, I think a great CIH set up with a digital is going to cost you over $6000 even in 3 years. A workable one good enough for most people will be under $2500--but it won't be CRT or RS2 quality.
But I'll give you this, even if my price predictions are true, it means a G90 will be going for $1500-2000 in 2-3 years.
