I do not share your optimism. LCD is the oldest of the digital tech. It has had the most time for improvements to be applied and it is still the worst technology. Given the physical limitations of it, I only see improvements on the light source front. |
That is why I said "may". I don't think LCD will progress to much more, but I haven't heard as much about LCD reaching its limit as I have for DLP and LCOS. Of course, I don't pay that much attention to LCD, because I find it nothing more than a cheap solution. I have seen some 1080p DLPs on the used market for less than $1k. I would go this route before buying a new LCD unless it has a really good VP that might make it look good. See how I give myself some wiggle room. |
I've not seen 1080p DLPs on the used market for less than $1K. Which ones have you seen? I've seen some very good 720p DLPs at that price point, and I've said numerous places that I think they look better than all the 1080p LCDs made and would take them and the money savings over the 1080p LCD any day!

I soon as I say this, there will be rush to go search. I found one on Craigslist. I believe Optoma has a model for around $2500. Don't quote me as I have been out of the digital loop for awhile.

I will add one more thing before this becomes to much of a digital thread. I forgot about the Brightside tech now owned by Dolby. According to Brightside, a pj with a fourth panel could achieve 100k to 1 on/off. I am not sure why no one has ever incorporated the Brightside solution.

The Optoma HD80 is around that price and it is crap. The thing DLPs are actually good at (ANSI CR) this one is bad at. It has an on/off of 1600:1 and a ANSI of about 220:1. So, it really is no better than the LCDs it competes with in its price range.

I believe Tim did some testing with those units and said the blendzone was very visible.
