|
|
I own a Sony D50 that I am pretty happy with at the moment, but I may have a chance to get a NEC XG75. Anyone have an opinion on on how much better the NEC will perform over the Sony? Just trying to figure out weather I will see a big enough improvement in pq to make the switch worthwhile.
Thanks!

Yes it should be better. How much better thats is a good question, probably its based on the condition of the tubes in both sets. If the XG has good tubes IMO it should blow away the D50.

It all depends on the setup. If you are careful and exacting in your physical setup and then in your geometry then the XG should really be a step up. Like Mike said, good tubes are a must but if the price is right then you can always look for better tubes. You would of course be going from 7" to 8" tubes and from 800 lumens to about 1100 and a higher max resolution so that helps.

127.894456% improvement in picture.
2004.6% decrease in user friendliness.
312.84% increase in fan noise.
Or something around those numbers

Dave, did you have your picture improvement meter calibrated lately? Mine is showing 127.89448%
My fan noise number did agree with yours.
A hush box is a good idea to have with an XG it's almost a requirement.

I'm interested in adding one if and when I'm up and running again. Did I read somewhere that it's better to leave the case intact on XG's rather than stripping them down before building the hush box around it?

Interesting, mine has been naked for 6 years without incident.

Naked with hush box or just totally naked? I think it had something to do with how the fans exhaust and movement of air through the projector. With the right amount of exhausting airflow and a proper plenum I don't know why it would matter. Have any pics of your hush box Mike?

No, much closer to 3065.23%. NECs are a bitch.
IMHO

I didn't know you were an XG owner?

Note:
VENTILATED hush box.
I've seen convergence drift with a 3 sided hushbox with the front and back completely open. Solid as a rock by itself, convergence drift as soon as the hush box was put around it.
Fan noise never bugs me, if the D50 has>3000 hours on it, the XG will smoke it.

Absolutely! If the hush box is not ventilated the XG will smoke. But your right I would never consider a non-ventilated box

Ventilated how? Does that not defeat the purpose of "hushing" the projector? I know the front needs to be open around the lenses for some air intake but do the sides need louver type openings as well?

Ventilated either by connecting into the home’s HVAC or some type of ductwork with an inlet and outlet, in my case it is connected to the return air in the HVAC system. I run my furnace fan 24/7 so it moves enough air to not be a problem also since it’s recessed into the soffit it has about 20 cubic feet of free air space around it and this also helps.
