|
|
My eVGA 6600GT AGP graphics card died. I really liked it's performance and price. I'm looking for suggestions for a replacement. If you're wondering, it developed a short and is pulling down the 650 watt power supply that it is attached to and popping it's internal circuit breaker. It's not the supply as it does the same thing with two large supplies.
Thanks,

ATI 3850 is ideal for crt. Nvidia 8x00 and 9x00 cards don't support Powerstrip so getting those perfect timings is impossible.

Chip,
I have a XFX 7600GS that has been OK for a couple of years, but my HTPC stuttered at 1080P. I am going to get the Gigabyte 3870 for $161: (http://www.mwave.com/mwave/skusearch.hmx?SCriteria=AA72780&CartID=done&nextloc)
My son has one and it is great for video and moderate gaming. It off loads all the video processing so you don't have to have a quad core processor for smooth playing of HD content.

I have a ATI 3850 now, seems like a good card if you game. If you don't game an HD-2600Pro worked well with PowerStrip and HD-DVD/Blu-ray. The only reason I switched it because I wanted to try some games.
The HD-2600Pro can be had for $50 after rebait from newegg, oh crap I see you have AGP, that makes things a little more complicated, I haven't had much experience with the newer cards and AGP. Are you wanting to do Blu-ray/HD-DVD?

What do you need in a Card, I'm using a Nvidia Geforce 7950GT but if all you need is a 6600 why not just go and get another. Unless you are doing HD a 6 series card should work fine.
I would stay away from an Ati card unless the drivers have improved since I used them last, also stay away from the 8 series Nvidia if you need custom resolutions
