Hey,

Can I inject a bit of comic relief here... I thought this was beyond funny...

A thief made the mistake of a lifetime recently. He broke into professional female boxer Derdre Rodriguez's house and tried to steal her PS3, PSP and videogames as she lay sleeping.

She woke up, saw the robber climbing out of her window, chased him down, smashed his head in with an ice chipper, then, in the most awesome coupe-de-grace ever, the former pugilist forced the thief to pick up the stolen electronics he'd dropped during the chase (A PlayStation 3, a PSP, cell phones and videogames). She then made him wait in the house for the cops to show up and arrest him.

More woman than you could handle, that's for sure.

Check out the video here.

It's very important that people add that to the end of that sentence.

I have a PS3 just like you, also at firmware v2.2 so it does exactly what yours does and none of my 800 SD DVDs look anywhere near as good as HD to my eyes on my setup. I'm never fooled or tricked into thinking "Wow this is very close to HD".

I see this all time in the audio forums too - people try high resolution audio either in SACD or the new lossless audio formats and say "it doesn't sound any better than the regular stuff" and then conclude that therefore there's no difference. Bullsh*t! That's completely illogical. There's no difference on *THEIR* system. You can apply a blanket statement like "there's no difference between the two formats".

Same goes for upconverted SD and HD. There's 6 times the temporal resolution in HD. You can't make that up by upconverting. If you don't see a difference either your setup can't resolve it or your brain's not noticing it. (The last part is very common too - some people just don't care or notice no matter how much you point things out).

Then the same goes for you. Don't claim we are illogical for not noticing a night and day difference between good SD upconverted and bad HD.

We are in fact commenting on what we have seen on our setups.

I don't think people (at least me) are trying to make blanket statements that SD upconverted is as good as HD.

Greg,

I'm not sure you're quite understanding what Kal is getting at. BD/HD has SIX times the resolution of SD DVD. Put simply, there IS a night/day difference between the two. If you're not see something close to the inherent night/day difference, then I agree what what Kal is saying: That something in your system is not performing well enough to reveal the night/day difference between the two. He's not saying your illogical for not seeing much difference; Rather, he's saying you'd be illogical if, upon seeing little difference, you then deduced that there WAS little difference between the two, when the reality is that the your system merely reveals little difference between the two.

Or you have a PS3 and are using its component video output like I currently am. I still need to ante up for a HDfury and cables to change the video chain to my 1292Q from analog to digital so that my PS3 will output as well as what my HD-A1 already outputs over component video.

I still find that there are more titles on HD DVD than Blu-ray that I want. Hopefully that will change and Blu-ray prices will come down a bit. In the meantime, I cannot complain about $10 HD DVDs with free shipping. There's at least one HD DVD that's less than its DVD counterpart -- even though the HD DVD is a combo disc that includes a DVD version! Hilarious!

Aside from the crappy component video output and lack of 5.1/7.1 analog audio output, the PS3 is a nice system. I really like the quick load times. I can forgive the fact that it uses a Bluetooth remote. I have more gripes that the remote isn't backlit than that other IR remotes don't interface with the PS3 without hacks.

The PS3 has got me back into gaming a little. Call of Duty 4 on the Internet is a blast, often literally! Grand Theft Auto 4 will also be a killer app. The free online play is having me buy PS3 versions of new games instead of Xbox 360 versions. Microsoft should wise up and make Xbox Live free.

Hey,

Just read about a person in highdefforum who returned his HD DUD player to Walmart and was refunded $175. (They also refunded his extended warranty purchase.) Then he went over to Circuit City and bought a better HD DUD player for $54 (Open Box.)

Here is his quote "Ok. I'm back. I got $175 back from my A3 with the extended warranty. Went to CC and found an open box A20 for $54!!!!!!!!"

The second gen players are better made then 3rd gen which is why he was happy to trade his A3 for an A20.

So,..... I say return the thing to Walmart. They will give you more then it's worth. (Even if I think it's worth 0.)

Exactly. I should let SC talk for me... he explains things better than me. Smile I apologize if I gave the impression I meant anything other than what SC wrote above.

Even with component out of the PS3 through the RTC2200, I found Blu-ray much much better than SD on my setup.

Yes, that I agree with. That isn't what I am taking from his responses. Embarassed

Where exactly do I say ANY SD Movies look as good as any HD Movies??

Maybe, you should read before you go on a typing tangent. If I didn't make my point clear enough, Please feel free to ask for a clarification.

What I said (meant) was that if people did NOT see any Movies in HD and instead got an up converting DVD player they would see a DIFFERENCE from the non up converted DVD. And since they see a difference they may NOT want to spend another $400 for a Blu-ray player. Therefore it may slow the growth of HD software.

...On MY setup I CAN SEE a difference between up converted SD DVDs on my PS3 compared to non up-converted SD DVDs on my Panny. If you CANNOT see a difference on yours Kal, then you must be one of the few people on here who has a system that is not as good as mine! (doubtful)

Funny thing is I've NEVER been fooled or tricked into thinking "WOW this is very close to HD" either!!
I said "it looked three times better than I've ever seen it before." and "NO I don't think it looks as good as it will on HD."

Next time take the time to read my post BEFORE you attack it!!

Hows that old saying go again......Everyone likes a little A$$, but nobody likes a smart A$$!!

Rant OVER!

Shocked

This is almost as bad as the CRT vs digital argument..... So.. yea, we have two different HD storage/playback technologies, and varying systems that display HD and upscaled SD differently, and different tastes in image quality. So be it.

But is it really worth battling over? Not in my opinion Thumbs Down

And people also have different tastes in discussion topics. While you may not find this interesting, 4 pages of posts seems to indicate not everyone agrees with you.

PS: I have to admit that my interest was only good for 3 or 4 posts. At this point I really don't care who's wrong or right. Wink
