Since the projector is quite a distance from the viewer in a rear projection setup, it's not very noisy. Because it's behind the screen, you can't see it. And this is why I occasionally forget to turn my PJ off and leave it on all night. D'oh! I did it last night, and it was couple of hours after I got up this morning before I noticed it was on. That was a good 10 hours of usage for nothing.

You need a control system like mine (crestron) that will turn everything on/off with one button push. I'm not sure IR will pass through the screen. I have mine controlled via RS232 and works great.

Really what does it matter if it gets left on over night. As long as it is a black screen it really isn't harming anything all you have to feel bad about is the electricity you wasted by leaving it running.

IR does indeed pass thru the screen unaffected.
Aren't Crestrons hard to setup? I'm afraid I'm too retarded get one up and running. Plus, they're expensive, right?

Even with the screen muted, the whatchamacallit in the tubes is still on and wearing. (Hope that's not too technical. )

10 hours out of almost 14,000 for me. Still, do you want to just throw hours away? I really don't.

Phil,
I don't think that's too much of an issue on a G70, on a Marquee if the P14 voltage is too high the whatchamacallit in the tubes will die faster but I don't think that the G70 has that problem.

Yes, control systems are difficult to get set up and working, but the Crestron software makes everything a lot easier than it could be. Plus, there are a few people on this very forum (Chip included) that know what they're doing that could support new users.
All the new stuff is really expensive high-resolution wireless color displays and IP-based, so the older used stuff is surprisingly inexpensive on fleabay. You can often buy an entire late-90's era control system with all necessary pieces and parts for under $500. This is a system that could have cost upwards of $10,000 (maybe a LOT more) when installed new.
It's true that it's a fair amount of work to get system controller set up and installed, but it's slicker than whale sh*t on a melting ice floe once it's all working. If you're wondering, that's REALLY slick.

I made a box with a relay inside. Power to the contacts comes from the wall. Power for the relay comes from my receiver. When I turn my receiver on with the remote, the receptacle in the back becomes hot, turns on the relay which makes the receptacles in the box hot and provides power to all devices except the computer. Likewise when I turn off the receiver, everything turns off. The box cost me about 10 bucks and an hour assembly.

Zeb,
Cool! I didn't know that. Now I don't feel so bad about all the times I left it on.

Walt,
That's a good idea! Since I'm leaving my HT with house when I sell it, I really don't care too much at this point. But I may build one just for kicks.
I guess it wouldn't be too hard to find a relay. My preamp is a long way from my PJ, so I think I'd rather use the low voltage output on my pre that's used to switch other audio gear on and off. Anyone know what voltage that is? Also, how many amps do you think the relay should be rated?

Terry,
Being a *C*rt buff, you would think I would know that, but I couldn't think of that to save my life when I was posting. Normally when my memory fails me, I poke around the forum and try to find mention of whatever is eluding me, but because I'm getting lazier than I use to be (if that's possible), I didn't bother.
My new catch-all phrase for things I can't remember or don't know: whatchamacallit. Expect to see it a lot in the future.
