On my Sony 1252, I replaced one of the hot-running transistors on a convergence board. Though before putting the board back in I put silver heatsink compound on the back of the trans'. Only when I went to re-attach the heat spreader that I remembered the heat-spreader already has white heatsink compound applied as a type of tape in just the right spot for that transistor.
Anyone know if there's any problems with mixing heatsink compounds? I'm reluctant to remove the now contaminated tape because it's quite thick and I don't know if I'll be able to get proper contact without it.
I'm thinking it might be okay, because as I understand it, these compounds are all about as non-reactive as one can get.
cheers'

As long as it dissapates the heat there should not be a problem

as long at the transistor sits flush up against the heat sink you can remove the old compound. and all you will do by mixing the compounds is reduce the thermal conductance of the silver compound because the white stuff is silicone based and does not work as well. Just a tip heat sink compounds work best in very thin layers. It is only to fill the small gaps left from the grinding process of the metal. For optimum heat transfer you should polish the heatsink and the metal on the back of the transistor. Use a very thin layer of the silver compound more is not better. This applies to all heatsinks and items to be cooled. Just don't polish a processor unless it is a total dull finish.
